The present Mossley Band was formed in 1955, but the beginnings trace back to 1853 when the Mossley Temperance Band were the winners of the first ever Belle Vue Contest. The 1971 BBC Radio Manchester knockout competition 'Blow By Blow' added to a long list of successes won by the Mossley Band, an LP was released to commemorate the event. The programme on the album was a composite selection of items used in the various rounds. Highlights of the programme were supplied by the three soloists - Fred Shepley, Roy Cottam and Michael Hawkins. Each one performed brilliantly and brought superlatives flowing from the adjudicator. The three combined their talents with the band for some beautiful playing on the 'Tintagel' and 'Embassy Suite' tracks. The programmes used in the competition were selected for their entertainment value and also to show off every facet of the band's capability. By virtue of the band's second placing in the 1971 Wills Championship section final, they now moved into the country's top twenty bands in the Champion of Champions section. After hearing this album, one can be left in no doubt that they were worthy of this high rating at the time. The band's Musical Director, John Harrison BBCM, enjoyed the reputation of being one of the country's leading band teachers and adjudicators, and the band's success at the time was a reflection of his hard work.
