The Mossley Band - Mossley Festival 1974, A Musical Souvenir LP

The Mossley Festival of 1974 was held to commemorate the ending of Mossley as a Borough. Throughout the colourful history of the town, the Mossley Band has played through a useful part in local life; having its ups and downs but always pulling through.

History books show that in 1309 Henry, son of William De Mossley claimed land which afterwards became known as Mossley. By 1821 Mossley consisted of some 300 houses and a population of 1,212 persons. Mossley Band was established in 1841; the population by this time being 1,500. In 1853 Mossley Temperance Band won the first prize at Belle Vue. On March 13th 1885 Mossley was granted a Charter of Incorporation, with the first Council Meeting being held on 9th June 1885. In 1897 Mossley Brass Band won the first prize at Belle Vue. By 1911 the population had risen to 13,205 and on January 27th 1919 Mossley Prize Band was re-formed. October 1st of the same year saw the famous Mr Herbert Scott appointed conductor of the band. By 1935 the conductor was Mr Tom Chadwick.

The present band was re-formed in 1955 and over the next nineteen years would have its share of success being supported entirely by public subscription, and attaining Championship status in 1960. At 1974's historic milestone in the town's history the band were pleased to take the opportunity of presenting to the people and friends of Mossley a lasting musical souvenir.

The band's Musical Director at that time was Mr Ernest Vint of Bolton, who was for many years principal euphonium with the famous Wingates Temperance Band. His capabilities as a conductor were well known throughout the north west.
